At the idea’s inception, I considered riding through the US all by myself. In March, I rode the 270 miles from San Diego to Idyllwild round trip to find out if I was truly up to the task. Although I enjoyed the open road and cycling solitude, the camping, dining and the fear of landing in a ditch on the side of the road alone did not excite me. I’d much rather land in a ditch with a friend! My mother was delighted to hear that I did not, indeed, want to go solo.
I am fully and completely excited (and honored) have one cycling partner for each the different legs of the journey south. Here they are in order from north to south:
- Jenny will help me warm up the greater Seattle Area before I start the journey south.
Naomi A will fly over from Idaho and ride from Seattle to Portland.
Manna will drive up from San Diego and join me from Portland to San Francisco before taking his Surly Long Haul Trucker to New Zealand for grad school. Aug. Update: He'll continue on south with me until early November. We'll see how far we get.
- Robert will fly from Australia and meet me in San Francisco where we will head to the Mexican border and cycle on to Panama. Once finished with this leg and his next, he will have ridden from Alaska to Argentina. Aug. Update: Robert had to cancel. He is staying right here in my post though because he has been instrumental in preparing for this adventure.
My cycling partner following Panama has yet to be decided. Could it be you?
